Innovation in industrial districts: An agent-based simulation model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Despite the wideness of the literature on industrial districts (IDs), the driving processes of ID innovation have not still received much attention: Questions about how new innovation processes emerge, how, when and where they evolve are minimally addressed in the literature. To address these questions new theoretical approaches and methodologies are needed. In the paper we approach this topic by adopting complexity science and by using the agent-based simulation methodology. In particular, an agent-based simulation is conducted to investigate how innovation processes in IDs have to be modified to assure their survival in a highly competitive environment. r 2005 Elsevier B.V. Organizational Learning and Knowledge Spillover in Innovation Networks: Agent-Based Approach (Extending SKIN Framework)
In knowledge-based economy, knowledge has a public good and non-rivalry nature. Firms build their own knowledge stock not only by means of internal R&D and collaboration with partners, but also by means of previously spilled over knowledge of other firms and public research laboratories (such as universities). Firms based on their absorptive capacity, and level of intra-industry and extra-indus...

Agent-based models, an instance of the wider class of connectionist models, allow bottom-up simulations of organizations constituted by a large number of interacting parts. Thus, geographical clusters of competing or complementary firms constitute an obvious field of application. This contribution explains what agent-based models are, reviews applications in the field of industrial clusters and...

Literature about Industrial Districts has largely emphasized the importance of both economic and social factors in determining the competitiveness of these particular firms' clusters. For thirty years, the Industrial District productive and organizational model represented an alternative to the integrated model of fordist enterprise. Nowadays, the district model suffers from competitive gaps, l...
متن کاملSimulating Knowledge-generation and Distribution Processes in Innovation Collaborations and Networks
An agent-based simulation model representing a theory of the dynamic processes involved in innovation in modern knowledge-based industries is described. The agent-based approach allows the representation of heterogeneous agents that have individual and varying stocks of knowledge. The simulation is able to model uncertainty, historical change, effect of failure on the agent population, and agen...
متن کاملAn Innovation Measurement Model Based on THIO Classification: An Automotive Case Study
Many criteria have been presented so far for innovation measurement. Presenting the relation between input and output of innovation, completing other criteria and achieving more comprehensive criteria has also been raised. What is of vital importance is the right utilization of these criteria towards measuring innovation. This paper seeks to present a model to measure innovation that, in additi...
